ATM goalkeeping coach Hamid Ramli confirms that Irwan Fadzli Idrus is a freekick specialist. He says " Many goalkeepers are beaten by his curling kick. Highly competitive, he is also a role model to other players." Bola Pantai Timur talks to Irwan Fadzli to find out more about his feat. Excerpts...
Q. When did you were first recognised as a free kick specialist?
A. I scored free kick for the first time against Palestine in the 2001 pre-World Cup. Then
during the 2001 SEA Games when I scored the winning goal against Indonesia. I curled it from 30 metres.
Q. Who has guided you?
A. Coach B Sathianathan has been responsible in guiding me. He always teaches me after training. I also had a stint in Germany in 2002 with Eintracht Frankfurt e.V.
Q. Which were your most memorable free kicks?
Q. How many goals have you scored through free kicks?
A. Many goals. Sorry I can't give the exact number.
Q. Which local and foreign free kick specialists do you admire?
A. Indra Putra and Lampard. I learned to take free kicks with Indra when we were playing together.
Q. Your advice to young and existing players who want to become a specialist in football.
A. Always practise regularly although it doesn't have to be every day. Focus on where you want to kick. Do not rush when the whistle has been blown. Be confident that the ball will go in.
