Terengganu Football Team: All Time Favourite
Certainly I have watched many local and overseas soccer teams. But
my all time favourite remains one - my state team, Terengganu.
It is probably due to several factors.
Accident of birth is one. I was born here in 1961.
The number of years I have been following this team is another. Since the late 1960s until now, I have never disowned this special team.
It is partly a reflection of the struggle by its people and successive governments to improve our lot. In the 60s and 70s especially, we were relatively backward, compared to most states on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Yet we were not and are not mentally poor. Sometimes it suits us to play underdog.
We have caught up a geat deal since. On the football front, Terengganu has done Malaysia proud. It has been producing the country's big names in soccer, players, coaches and managers alike - The late Dato' Bakar Daud, Dato' Che' Mat Jusoh, Haji Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, Abdullah Mohamad, Sulaiman Rejab, Mohamad Hamzah, Harun Jusoh, Yahaya Jusoh, Abdah Alif, Yunus Alif, Dato' Marzuki Ismaun, Abdullah Ali, the late Ong Yu Tiang, Badrul Hisham Abdullah, Mubin Mokhtar, Arifin Osman, Rosdi Talib, Hairuddin Omar, Syamsuri Mustafa and many more.They were aided by several local and foreign players (and coaches) who decided to be with this winnable team. Among them: Ahmad Paijan, Nasir Jalil, Wan Ezila Daud, Raimi Jamil, Wan Rohaimi, A Ganeson, Ghani Malik, Frank Pastor, Seidu Issifu, Sapian Wahid, Marlon Van der Sander, Marian Valach, Marco Bilic and Mat Zan Mat Aris.
The team has won the coveted Malaysia Cup, FA Cup, Charity Shield, Sultan's Gold Cup, Burnley Cup and other honours.
It is a tribute to the team's artistry, skills, finesse, strategy, techniques, tactics in both bad and good times, triumph and tragedy as well as the quiet but indisputable loyalty of their die-hard fans and supporters, that I dedicate part of my energy and attention to them.
